I’m Thinking of Ending Things (Review)

A psychological horror that evokes unease in its closeness, quietness, and ordinariness, I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a gripping and tension-fueled story that veers into places you’d never expect.

“Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can’t fake a thought.”

Incredibly unputdownable, I’m Thinking of Ending Things evokes the familiarity of long, deep car conversations but in an unsettling new light. Featuring well-loved plotlines like relationship troubles, meeting your partner’s parents for the first time, and road trips, this short horror story brings them into a world of eerie, edgy terror with an inexpressibly genius tone that will have you questioning everything even when you’re not quite sure why.

“Both fictions and memories are recalled and retold. They’re both forms of stories.”

But it is the ending of the book that really makes the story. Both an utter failure and a beaming success, the final turn is as clever as it is lazy. Relying on a concept that every writer has been told not to use and which alters the entirety of the rest of the novel, the story somehow subverts a cheap twist into something so incredibly successful that it begs to immediately be read again to discover the nuances which were at first imperceptible.

“Getting to know someone is like putting a never-ending puzzle together. We fit the smallest pieces first and we get to know ourselves better in the process.”

I’m Thinking of Ending Things is the perfect novel for those looking for a similar read to The Cabin at the End of the World, and readers wanting an original, mind-bending thriller. I rated I’m Thinking of Ending Things 4 out of 5 stars.

The Between (ARC Book Review)

Reminiscent of “House of Leaves” mixed with the 1980’s movie “Labyrinth” but in a way that is shameful to both, “The Between” follows Paul Prentice after he discovers a trap door in his backyard leading to a series of impossible rooms that change and remake themselves and a host of dangerous roles waiting to be filled. With the help of his friends, Paul begins to understand that the place is a world between worlds, not knowing if it will be enough to truly escape…
